What is BBTD?

BBTD is commonly referred to as Baby Bottle Tooth Decay.  It is most commonly found in children who are bottle fed or are in the transition period when your child is being weaned.  BBTD is indicated by some of the following signs:

  1. Decay in two or more of the top front teeth, bottom front teeth are generally not affected
  2. Possible decay in other primary teeth.
  3. Decay on tooth surfaces usually considered resistant to decay, like the side along the tongue.
  4. Rapid onset of decay in your child’s primary teeth.

What can be done about BBTD?

Prevention is key for BBTD as once it sets in your child can be more susceptible to future tooth decay. Believe it or not, brushing your child’s teeth is a great way to prevent BBTD.  Also while you are weaning your child take care as to the liquids, other than breast milk, that they consume.  Some water after fruit juice will help reduce the chances of BBTD.   Also using water during night time feedings will also help prevent BBTD.
