Tuberculosis and Breastfeeding

Mothers with untreated and active tuberculosis should not breastfeed their babies. Tuberculosis is an infectious disease most commonly spread by adults who have active tuberculosis.

According to the CDC, if you are being treated with the first line anti-tuberculosis drug then you most oftenly can contnue breastfeeding. This is due to the fact that concentrations of these drugs in breastmilk are too small to be toxic tto your child. Also these drugs will not protect your child against contracting tuberculosis because the concentrations are again too small.

As always be sure to talk tto your doctor about your plans to breastfeed while you conquor tuberculosis.
