Steps when using a Breast Pump
When you get ready to use a breast pump find a quiet spot where you will have twenty to thirty minutes undisturbed.
- Wash your hands with soap and water
- Wash and assemble all breast pump equipment
- Find a comfortable location to express your breast milk
- Gently massage your breasts or apply a warm washcloth
- Center the nipple on the plastic flange. Begin with the pump on the lowest setting and increase the speed until similar to your baby’s natural sucking rhythm
- Pump each breast for about seven minutes
- Massage your breasts a second time
- Pump each breast a second time for five to seven minutes or until milk no longer flows
- When the milk stops dripping release suction at the breast as you would with your baby
- Rub any excess milk onto your nipples and areola
- Pour the accumulated milk into a clean container for storage.
- Label the container with the date and amount and immediately refrigerate what you don’t plan to use right away
- Detach and disassemble the pump washing all components according to instructions.
