Signs your baby is effectively breastfeeding
Once your baby has latched on the next thing you should watch for are signs your baby is effectively breastfeeding.
Initially you should feel a more rapid and intense sucking sensation, this will in turn stimulate your let-down reflex. Once your milk flow is increased you should notice you baby slowing the rhythm, swallowing every two or three sucks. Some women may find that they feel a tingling sensation that occurs about the same time as the let-down reflex. however, what is more important is watching or feeling the change in rhythm of your baby. This will be the best indicator of your milk flow.
When watching your baby breastfeed you should see their ears wiggle or muscles twitch around the temple area, that coupled with the moving of their lower jaw (which compresses your areola and releases the milk) is a good sign that everything is going well on their end.
Once your baby has latched on and is sucking well they should not easily slip off the breast. Should this happen and it may as you both get better at breastfeeding, simply be patient and reintroduce your baby to your breast. Soon they will be effectively breastfeeding without incident!
