Public Breastfeeding Tips
The acceptance of public breastfeeding varies based on local customs and established norms, but here are several public breastfeeding tips that should help you adjust to feeding outside of your home.
The most important way to be comfortable with public breastfeeding is to be comfortable and relaxed when you feed at home. When you and your child have established a rhythm it will be easier for you regardless of your location.
Have a friend with you, ideally another breastfeeding mother. If this is not possible then your next best choice can be a place among other parents with small children.
Keep a change of clothes on hand, for you and your baby. You never know when your baby will burp or spit up more than normal.
A bottle of water. Breastfeeding can make you thirsty as your body produces breast milk. Having a bottle of water will make for a more pleasurable experience.
Weather permitting wear layers. If your breasts leak or there is a small “oops” then you can easily cover up the problem with an outside layer.
How to reverse let down. Try pressing hard on your breasts with your upper arms as this will help inhibit the flow of milk.
Remember not to let anyone let you feel uncomfortable about what you are doing. Breastfeeding is one of the most natural acts that can occur between mother and child. You baby’s needs come first.
Hopefully these public breastfeeding tips will help you have a better experience as you introduce your child to the larger world outside of the house.
