One Breast or Two?

One of the most common questions new mothers ask is whether they should give both breasts at each feeding or just one.  Ideally your baby will make this decision.  When a baby is healthy and breastfeeding normally they are capable of determining when it is time to switch breasts.

Babies need a good mixture of foremilk (lower fat) and hind-milk (higher fat content)  When a breast is full your baby will first be given the foremilk and as they continue to nurse the fat content of the milk will increase.  The higher fat content of the hindmilk causes the milk to last longer in the digestive system, specifically in the intestines preventing gas and colic and helping boost weight gain.
