Middle of the Night Feedings

One of the most dramatic adjustments you will make as a new parent is a loss of control on your sleep schedule.  Gone are the days (at least for now) of staying up as late as you want and sleeping as late as you want.  Now the amount of sleep you get will depend on your child.

Newborns don’t have a schedule as they are adjusting to the world around them.  Take shifts with your partner for the middle of the night feedings.  Express or pump some breast milk during the day so you partner can help out with those late night feedings.  Most babies wake two or three times to be fed during the night.  Some sleep up to four hours at a time, but that is generally the exception.

At around six or seven months, about the same time you are introducing solid food your baby will begin to sleep through the night.  There is no hard and fast rule and your baby will let you know when the need to eat.
