How can I tell if my baby’s eating enough?

As a mothers new to breastfeeding the question “How can I tell if my baby’s eating enough?” has probably crossed your mind.
A few things to put your mind at rest, your baby is eating enough if:

  • your baby looks satisfied and content after breastfeeding
  • you find you need to change about four to six wet diapers a day
  • they have regular bowel movements
  • sleeps well
  • act alert when awake
  • are gaining weight

To help with peace of mind you may find it useful to keep a “baby journal”of feeding times, diaper changes and general disposition. It will help you get to know your new child.

Some indications that your child may need more to eat are:

  • looking unhappy after eating
  • seems hungry often
  • isn’t making several wet and stool diapers a day
  • acts fussy or cries a lot
  • doesn’t appear to gain weight

As with all things with your new child if you have concerns contact your doctor as soon as possible as some of the indications above may be signs of other problems.
