Breastfeeding after a Cesarean Section
There is no reason to think that you will have problems breastfeeding after a cesarean section. While you and your baby may feel the after effects of the drugs adminstered during the proceedure these feelings will soon pass. You may find that your milk does not come in right away but be patient for as soon as the medication leaves your system your body will get to the business of milk production.
If you find your scar is sore or painful there are a few things you can do:
- try a lying down nursing postion
- use a specialized v-shaped pillow to support your baby and protect yor scar while you breastfeed.
- breastfeed while sitting up in bed with pillows across your knees to support your baby.
Most importantly keep an active dialogue with your doctor and lactation consultant as you adjust to breastfeeding as they will have advice taylored to your situation.
Breastfeeding after a cesarean section is possible and rewarding and may only require a few precautionary measures in the beginning.
