Is Breast Reduction Surgery and Breastfeeding Compatible?
Breast reduction surgery will not prevent you from breastfeeding your child as most women who undergo the surgery can produce some amount of milk. However it is typical that you may not produce enough milk to offer your child an exclusively breastfed diet. You should investigate breast milk banking to help make up the difference.
In some cases of breast reduction surgery the nipple is completely detached from the breast and will feel numb after you have healed. Although in a few rare cases the nerves have grown back and reconnected to the nipple this is not common. Without nerve connection you will be unable to breastfeed.
Breast reduction surgery and breastfeeding can be a good combination. Your doctor and lactation consultant can offer specific advice on how to best provide proper nutrition for your child.
