Breast Milk Expression Q & A

A few common questions and answers about breast milk expression.

I’m going back to work when should I start to express? Six to eight weeks is a good time to begin practicing expressing your breast milk.  This will allow you to learn at a more relaxed pace.  Knowing your child will have the food will help make the transition back to work easier.

My baby will be in the hospital special care unit for a month, how often will I need to express my breast milk? This will depend on how established your breastfeeding has become.  To maintain the same level of milk supply a rough estimate is every three to four hours.  This could also be a good time to help boost your breast milk production and donate to a local breast milk bank.

How long should I expect each breast milk expression session to take? Like breastfeeding itself you will get better the more often you express your milk.   Expect to spend about thirty minutes, stopping and starting as well as switching sides.  Just like when you started breastfeeding you should begin with shorter more frequent sessions
